About
Electrochemist specialising in lithium-ion cathode materials and silicon-graphite composite anodes. Twenty years of applied R&D across UK automotive (Jaguar Land Rover, Williams Advanced Engineering) and Australian battery research. PhD Imperial College London (2005). Currently independent technical advisor supporting battery startups on materials selection, cell design, and safety qualification, and expert witness for IP and technical disputes. Co-author on 30+ peer-reviewed publications and four issued patents.

Experience
Founder / Principal Consultant
2023–PresentWhittaker Technical
Independent electrochemistry advisory. Technical due diligence for VC investments; expert witness on lithium-ion IP matters.
Principal Research Scientist, Battery Materials
2015–2023CSIRO Energy
Led cathode-materials program; principal investigator on three Australian Renewable Energy Agency grants.
Project History
Electrolyte-formulation IP due diligence, battery acquisition
2024Australian strategic investor (confidential) · Pharmaceuticals & Life Sciences
Principal technical reviewer on the IP due-diligence pack for a mid-stage battery-technology acquisition. Assessed the freedom-to-operate position across the electrolyte-additive family, reviewed cell-level test data, and presented findings to the acquirer board.
Grid-scale battery thermal-abuse failure investigation
2023Grid-scale BESS operator (confidential) · Energy & Renewables
Independent failure-investigation lead on a grid-scale battery thermal-abuse event. Reviewed BMS telemetry, cell tear-down photographs, and the regulatory notification pack; produced the root-cause analysis and recommendations adopted in the site re-energisation plan.

Silicon-graphite anode qualification for an Australian cell startup
2024Australian battery-materials startup (Series B) · Energy & Renewables
Technical diligence lead, anode qualificationAdvisory
Technical due-diligence and qualification pathway for a high-silicon composite anode.
Challenge
Startup claimed 350 Wh/kg at cell level, but independent cycle-life data and safety qualification were incomplete for Series B investor diligence.
Solution
Designed and oversaw an accelerated cycling and abuse-test programme against IEC 62660 and UN 38.3; independently validated first-cycle efficiency and capacity-retention claims.
Outcome
Confirmed 300+ cycle retention at 80% SoH under the representative duty cycle; report underpinned the lead investor's term sheet.
